You Are Here - Melton Gallery

Featuring Cube of Light, a 41-minute 7.1.2 surround-sound multimedia installation created by Christina Giacona and Patrick Conlon

“You Are Here” is an immersive art installation that premiered from August 20th to November 19th, 2020 in the Melton Gallery at the University of Central Oklahoma that includes Cube of Light, a 41-minute 7.1.2 surround-sound multimedia installation created by Christina Giacona and Patrick Conlon.

Each of the nine sonic movements of Cube of Light is paired with a contemporary dance video created by an Oklahoma City-based choreographer, featuring the work of Hui Cha Poos, Audrey Johnston, Austin Nieves, Tina Kambour, Kim Loveridge, and Ruth Margaret “Maggie” Boyett, dancers from RACE Dance Collective, Kaleidoscope Dance Company, and KD2, and film directors Sonni Adams and Josh Bivens of Freestyle Creative.

Curated by Veronica Cianfrano, the gallery also contained interactive works of art that drew inspiration from the musical composition and encouraged the attendees to emotionally and artistically express themselves as they moved throughout the exhibit. The narrative of the music and choreography deals with what it means to live and die in such a short time in a universe that is endlessly expansive. By creating this installation, Conlon and Giacona hope the audience will reflect on how every human life deserves to be valued equally and treated fairly, and to question how and why humans create structures of systematic inequality.

This project was made possible by grants and funding from the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition (OVAC), The Kirkpatrick Family Fund, the University of Oklahoma’s Ruggles Native American Music Series, and the University of Central Oklahoma College of Fine Arts and Design; and through generous in-kind donations from Freestyle Creative, Evolve Research, and the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma.
